Cut flowers are not only a beautiful interior decoration but also a unique way to express emotions. To keep them looking fresh for as long as possible, it’s worth knowing how to care for them properly. Our florists at Lu La Fleur share proven tips that can extend the freshness of your bouquet by several days.
As soon as you receive your bouquet, place it in a clean vase filled with lukewarm water. Avoid cold or icy water, as it can shock more delicate flowers. Change the water every 1–2 days to prevent the growth of bacteria that shorten the lifespan of the flowers.
Regularly trimming the ends of the stems is essential. Use a sharp knife or pruning shears to cut the stems at a 45-degree angle, preferably underwater, to avoid air bubbles that block water absorption. Re-trimming every few days helps the flowers absorb water better and stay fresh longer.
Adding a flower food solution to the water is highly recommended. You can request it when placing your order with us. Instructions for use are provided on the packaging.
The location of your vase also matters. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight, near radiators, or in a draft. Also, don’t keep flowers close to fruit, as it releases ethylene, which accelerates wilting. A cool, shaded spot is ideal.
Check your bouquet regularly and remove any wilted leaves or flowers. This will help prevent bacteria from spreading and keep the remaining blooms fresher for longer.
It’s also helpful to understand the specific needs of different flower types. Roses benefit from having their lower leaves removed to prevent rot in the water. Tulips don’t need much water – just around 5 centimeters is enough. Gerberas are sensitive to bacteria, so they need frequent water changes. Lilies should have their pollen removed to avoid staining and extend their lifespan. Most flowers in our bouquets come pre-cleaned of leaves, but if you buy them elsewhere, be sure to check the stems before placing them in water.
Taking care of cut flowers isn’t difficult, and with just a few simple steps, you can enjoy their beauty for many days. At Lu La Fleur, we take great care to ensure our bouquets are fresh and long-lasting, and we include flower food with every order to help you care for them at home.
